Research Support

NACCHO receives numerous requests from researchers to provide letters of support or partner in research proposals. Whilst NACCHO’s role is not that of a research institute it does advocate for community-developed solutions that contribute to the quality of life and improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We recognise and advocate for the right of “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to be engaged in research that affects or is of particular significance to them.” 1.

Unfortunately, we are not able to support all requests. Prior to submitting a request for a letter of support or research partnership, please consider whether your project satisfies the guiding principles against which it will be assessed (below).  

NACCHO support does not negate the need for ethical approvals from appropriate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ethics committees. 

Guiding principles: 

  • The project aims and methodologies align with the National Agreement on Closing the Gap Priority Reforms. 
  • The project aims align with NACCHO strategic priorities.
  • The project has Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander leadership, and/or strong representation in senior roles or governance structures. 
  • The proposed benefit and impact of the research on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people is clearly articulated. 
  • The proposed methodology is clear and aligns with established ethical conduct guidelines for research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. 
  • The project is national in scope (or with clear plans to scale to a national level). 
  • NACCHO has capacity to provide the requested support for the project.
