Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid Trainers

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid Trainer (50D) reports to the Training and Development Centre Coordinator, and is directly accountable to the Workforce Development Manager, and is responsible for developing, planning, promoting and delivering non-accredited Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid Training to support the workforce within organisations participating in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Suicide Prevention Network.

About You

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • Aboriginality is an essential criterion and is provided for in accordance with section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA).
  • Certification as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander MHFA Instructor with MHFAA, or the ability to become certified by MHFAA.
  • A current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.
  • Possession of a current Western Australian Working with Children Card.
  • Demonstrated experience in the delivery of training or presentations to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge and/or an understanding of the current trends and issues affecting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal communities throughout the state.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work in a team environment and independently as required.
  • Strong organisational skills, the capacity to successfully manage competing priorities, maintain attention to details and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, collate, organise and analyse data.
  • Demonstrated ability to uphold the principles of cultural safety including an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Ideally, in addition to the above, we are looking for someone who:

  • Possession of Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, Certificate IV in Mental Health or equivalent.
  • Possession of a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) or willingness to obtain.
  • Knowledge of evidence based and culturally appropriate approaches to mental health or social and emotional wellbeing within Aboriginal communities.

The position involves working within a multicultural organisation where the majority of employees, clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Please note: In addition to the above skills and experience, the successful candidate will require an unrestricted WA “C” Class Driver’s Licence, and be required to submit a National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months) prior to appointment.
