About the Role:

Menzies is looking for an Aboriginal Health Practitioner to be part of the Deadly Ears in Deadly Hands research team.

The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will work within the Deadly Ears in Deadly Hands research team to yarn with and support families of children on the Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) paediatric wards and assist with the identification of those children who are suitable to join the Deadly Ears in Deadly Hands study. They will also conduct ear and hearing assessments and make clinical decisions regarding the appropriate ear health management plan, as guided by the Otitis Media Guidelines for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will also be required to support the families through the hospital discharge process, helping the carers understand the healthcare requirements of their child after they leave hospital, follow-up the children in the study, administering satisfaction questionnaires with the family members and arrange and conduct follow-up ear health checks when required.

This position is based in Darwin; however, there may be a requirement to travel remotely via light aircraft and/or 4WD up to 2 days per trip, 15 times a year.

What you will bring to the role

As an enthusiastic, qualified Aboriginal Health Practitioner, you will have an extensive experience working in children’s hearing assessment; and the ability to:

• Yarn with families on the hospital paediatric wards, identifying those who are suitable for the Deadly Ears in Deadly Hands study and ensuring that they have a full understanding of the requirements of the study.
• Conduct clinical assessments, data collection, medical records checks, and collect and transport specimens for the study and conduct satisfaction questionnaires and follow-up ear health checks.
• Organise and conduct regular visits with the children and families in the study during their time as hospital in-patients in order to educate the carers on ear health and provide education and support during their discharge from the hospital.
• Make clinical assessments and recommendations and liaise with hospital staff and other stakeholders.

In addition, you will have the relevant Aboriginal Health Practitioner qualification and current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

This role requires good communication skills (both orally and in writing) and the ability to engage with Aboriginal people and people from diverse cultures as well as the ability to work collaboratively with health professionals and academic colleagues
