About the role:

On a normal day in the John Hunter Hospital Switchboard, we take upwards of 5000 – 6000 calls a day between 5 operators, we are the busiest hospital in our area, as well as the biggest Trauma hospital outside of Sydney. These calls can be Doctors, patients, patient’s families, carers, helicopter calls, and everything in between. We have a small team of 21, but there are only 5 operators on at a time. It is fast-paced and challenging at times, but very meaningful work as we are the first point of contact for anyone contacting the hospital, we set the scene for the rest of their journey that day.

  • You will be updating local policies, entering health roster, entering account data for our mailroom, compiling data for emergency testing, developing roster, disaster testing, safety walks, hazard inspections, ordering equipment and stationery, managing complaints, and concerning phone calls
  • You will provide support and lead the Switchboard team
  • You will be closely supported by your administration manager until you are ready to lead the team, from there we will have regular catch-ups to debrief and go over concerns or improvements in the service
  • You will be provided with all the training and orientation that is offered by Hunter New England Health, and you will be given time to complete these
  • We have a ‘My Health Learning’ portal that is equipped with an array of training you will have access to if it coincides with your position

John Hunter Hospital is located within the Hunter New England Local Health District and is nestled between multiple beautiful beaches and the magnificent Hunter Valley vineyards which are just an hour’s drive away. The hospital has direct access to public transport and is close to numerous public schools and several major shopping centres.
