This is a position identified for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people on the basis of a genuine occupational qualification under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants must demonstrate Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status in addition to addressing the selection criteria.

This is a Level 3 position. However, if there are no appropriate Level 3 applicants, applications from Level 1 and 2 will be considered. The selection criteria reflects the requirements for a Level 3 applicant. Responses from Level 1 or 2 applicants need to demonstrate their level of competence with regard to the same criteria and their ability to work towards Level 3. The expected performance of the incumbent will be commensurate with his/her years of experience and current level at commencement of appointment. The incumbent will work towards meeting the criteria for Level 3.

About the role:

We are seeking a dedicated professional to provide therapeutic interventions to children aged 10 to 17 who have displayed harmful sexual behaviour, and their parents / carers / support people. Our focus is on intervening early to enhance safety of children and young people who have harmed and those who have been harmed. Our goals are holistic and aim to enable children and young people cease harmful sexual behaviour, restore relationships by demonstrating responsibility and enhance their overall wellbeing.


In this role, you will work alongside at least one other clinician, collaborating closely with referrers, children and young people, and their families according to the New Street model of care. Our service provides medium to long-term work, ranging from 6 months to 2 years on average.

We prioritise Aboriginal children in out-of-home care and emphasise culturally competent and accessible services.

Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Providing direct therapeutic counselling to children, parents, and carers.
  • Collaborating with other clinicians, referrers, and families.
  • Along with your colleagues, ensuring culturally competent and accessible services for Aboriginal children.
  • Engaging with the community, including educational institutions, NGOs and Aboriginal specific services.
  • Working with other staff members in the Violence, Abuse, and Neglect (VAN) network within HNE.

At our Kamilaroi and Gomeroi Countries | Tamworth location, our team consists of two other clinicians, a service manager and administration support. At our Awabakal Country | Newcastle location, we have five clinicians, a senior clinician and administration support. Currently, we have four Aboriginal staff in our team. Our clinical work is a collective responsibility, and we take pride in our collaborative approach.

Our team regularly comes together to discuss caseloads and ensure that work is done in pairs, providing comprehensive support and shared expertise. We believe in the power of teamwork and collective problem-solving.

We offer a robust two-week orientation program for new team members, ensuring they are well-prepared and integrated into our team. Additionally, all New Street staff gather annually for professional development, fostering a sense of community and connection within our network of Aboriginal staff and the broader team.
